2001 was a great year……winning the World Series, by beating New York Yankees….leaving it until the bottom of the ninth inning to win! The team was led by two of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball: Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.
Arizona had postseason victories over the St. Louis Cardinals (3–2 in the NLDS) and the Atlanta Braves (4–1 in the NLCS) to advance to the World Series where they beat the reigning champions, the New York Yankees, 4 to 3, to become the youngest expansion franchise to win the World Series.
This was the first time since 1991 that the home team won all seven games of a World Series and the first time that a National League team won a World Series in which the home team won all seven games of a World Series.
In 2002 season thwe finished with a 98-64 record and won the NL West Division Title. Unfortuncately, they were swept out in the NLDS by the St. Louis Cardinals. Randy Johnson was awarded with his fourth consecutive Cy Young Award.
Now, after some very difficult seasons, 2011 looks like being a great season….with considerable improvements in management, and superb improvement in the offense in recent weeks.
The recent DBacks success has been attributed to the approach of manager Kirk Gibson and a starting pitching behind Ian Kennedy, Daniel Hudson, Joe Saunders, and rookie Josh Collmenter. Then there is a much improved bullpen led by closer J. J. Putz.
As of August 16, 2011, the Diamondbacks were in first place in the National League West Division, three and a half games ahead of the San Francisco Giants, with a record of 69-53
